The Ultimate Buttermilk Fried Chicken and Waffle Sandwich: A Culinary Masterpiece

For many, the pairing of crispy fried chicken and fluffy waffles is a beloved culinary tradition, especially prominent in Southern cuisine. It’s a combination that perfectly marries savory and sweet, offering a truly unique dining experience. My own introduction to this delightful duo came later in life, largely thanks to extensive travel, particularly through the American South for work. I found myself indulging in this iconic dish more times than I could count, captivated by its comforting embrace.

Yet, for all its charm, it never occurred to me to consolidate this incredible feast into a single, handheld creation – a sandwich! The moment this idea sparked, it felt like a revelation. Imagine: no more juggling a fork and knife, just the pure, unadulterated joy of sinking your teeth into a complete bite, experiencing all those harmonious flavors and textures at once. This isn’t just a meal; it’s an adventure in every bite, a challenge in the best possible way to fit the whole, glorious sandwich into your mouth.

Crafting the Perfect Foundation: Bacon Cheddar Waffles

The foundation of this extraordinary sandwich lies in the waffles themselves, which are exceptional even on their own. These aren’t just any waffles; they’re infused with irresistible additions that elevate them far beyond a simple breakfast item. The texture is a delightful paradox: wonderfully crispy on the outside, yet unbelievably moist and tender within, thanks to the pockets of melted cheddar cheese. The savory notes of the cheese complement the subtle sweetness of the waffle batter beautifully. Thinly sliced green onions contribute a fresh, delicate sweetness and a touch of vibrancy, cutting through the richness. And, of course, the bacon – adding bacon to anything is almost a guarantee of success, and in these waffles, it delivers a smoky, salty crunch that is simply divine. This intricate blend of flavors and textures creates a waffle that is a star in its own right, providing a robust and flavorful base for our sandwich.

The Heart of the Sandwich: Crispy Buttermilk Fried Chicken

Nestled between these magnificent waffles is the star of the show: perfectly cooked buttermilk fried chicken. The preparation begins with a generous soak in buttermilk, a crucial step that tenderizes the chicken and imbues it with a subtle tangy flavor, ensuring every bite is succulent and juicy. This marination is the secret to achieving that melt-in-your-mouth tenderness that truly distinguishes excellent fried chicken. After its buttermilk bath, the chicken is coated in a meticulously seasoned flour and cornstarch mixture, which is where the magic of the crispiness happens. This double-dredging technique ensures an extra-crunchy, golden-brown crust that shatters with each bite, creating a delightful contrast with the tender meat inside. The seasoning blend, featuring cayenne pepper, garlic powder, paprika, and black pepper, adds layers of complex flavor and a gentle kick that is utterly addictive. Frying to perfection means achieving that ideal balance of an exquisitely crisp exterior and a thoroughly cooked, moist interior, making the buttermilk fried chicken a truly stellar component of this ultimate sandwich.

The Zing Factor: Maple Sriracha Aioli

No truly great sandwich is complete without a signature sauce to tie all the elements together, and for this masterpiece, the Maple Sriracha Aioli reigns supreme. This creamy, vibrant sauce delivers just the right amount of “zing” to cut through the richness of the fried chicken and waffles. The base of mayonnaise provides a luscious texture, while pure maple syrup introduces a delightful sweetness that perfectly complements the savory components. The real star, however, is the sriracha hot sauce, which infuses the aioli with a bold, spicy kick. It’s a carefully balanced blend: the sweetness of the maple mellows the heat of the sriracha, creating a harmonious flavor profile that is both intriguing and incredibly satisfying. This aioli doesn’t just add moisture; it acts as a flavor bridge, enhancing every other ingredient and leaving a memorable impression. A generous spread of this Maple Sriracha Aioli ensures that each bite of the sandwich is bursting with an exciting interplay of sweet, savory, and spicy notes.

The Symphony of Flavors: Bringing it All Together

When all these components unite, you have a sandwich that offers a perfect symphony of flavors and textures. The satisfying crunch of the buttermilk fried chicken, the tender yet crispy texture of the bacon cheddar waffles, and the lively zing from the maple sriracha aioli all come together in a singular, delightful experience. Adding fresh lettuce and tomato not only provides a welcome textural contrast and a hint of freshness but also brightens the overall profile, ensuring the sandwich feels balanced and not overly heavy. It’s a culinary journey in every mouthful: the initial crispness gives way to the juicy chicken, followed by the soft, cheesy waffle, all enveloped in the creamy, spicy-sweet aioli. Each ingredient plays a vital role, contributing to a harmonious whole that is far greater than the sum of its parts. This isn’t just a sandwich; it’s an expertly crafted flavor bomb designed to tantalize every taste bud, morning, noon, or night.

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 8 teaspoons of unsalted butter, melted and cooled
  • 1 cup buttermilk, room temperature
  • 3 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 2 scallions (green onions), thinly sliced
  • Cooking spray, for waffle iron

Buttermilk Fried Chicken:

  • 2 large chicken breasts, cut in half
  • 3/4 cups buttermilk
  • 1 cup cornstarch
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 tablespoon hot sauce, optional
  • Canola oil for frying

Maple Sriracha Aioli:

  • 1/3 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon pure maple syrup
  • 1 tablespoon sriracha hot sauce

Toppings:

  • Lettuce, tomato, and cheddar cheese slices to make sandwich (and any other toppings you may prefer)

Instructions

Maple Sriracha Aioli:

  1. Combine all ingredients in a small bowl. Set aside.

Waffles:

  1. Preheat waffle iron.
  2. In a large bowl, stir together the flour, brown sugar, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and black pepper.
  3. Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and set aside.
  4. Crack the eggs into a small bowl and whisk them together. Pour the whisked eggs into the well in the dry ingredients.
  5. Add the melted butter and buttermilk to the bowl. Using a wooden spoon, stir the waffle batter until it is just combined. It should be slightly lumpy.
  6. If the batter appears too thick, add a little more buttermilk, one tablespoon at a time, and stir until a smooth pouring consistency is reached.
  7. Gently mix in the cooked chopped bacon, shredded cheddar cheese, and thinly sliced green onions.
  8. Lightly grease the preheated waffle iron with cooking spray.
  9. Pour about ½ cup of batter into each waffle cavity (adjust amount based on your waffle iron’s size). Cook until the waffles are golden brown and crispy (typically 4-5 minutes, depending on the waffle iron).
  10. Place the cooked waffles on a cooling rack set over a baking sheet. Place them in a 200° F oven to keep them warm until ready to assemble the sandwiches.

Buttermilk Fried Chicken:

  1. Pour canola oil into a deep fryer or heavy-bottomed pot and begin to heat it to 350-375°F (175-190°C).
  2. Place the chicken pieces in a large bowl. Cover with buttermilk and add the hot sauce, if you choose to use it.
  3. Toss together until the chicken is evenly mixed and fully submerged in the buttermilk. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and place it in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes. (For maximum tenderness and juiciness, marinate for 2-4 hours, or even overnight if time allows.)
  4. In a shallow dish, combine the cornstarch, flour, salt, cayenne pepper, garlic powder, paprika, and black pepper. Whisk to ensure all spices are thoroughly mixed.
  5. To coat the chicken, take one piece from the buttermilk bowl, allow any excess buttermilk to slightly drain off, then dredge it thoroughly in the cornstarch and flour mixture. Pat the mixture firmly onto both sides of the chicken, ensuring an even coat.
  6. Return the coated chicken piece to the buttermilk bowl (with the remaining chicken) and coat both sides again. This creates a double-dip for extra crispiness.
  7. Immediately return the chicken piece to the flour mixture, once more, coating both sides completely and patting the mixture in well.
  8. Lay the fully coated chicken pieces on a rack placed over a baking sheet. Allow the coated chicken to rest for at least 10 minutes. This resting period helps the coating adhere better during frying.
  9. Carefully place one piece of coated chicken into the heated deep fryer oil. (Depending on the size of your fryer, you may need to fry each piece one at a time to avoid overcrowding and maintain oil temperature.)
  10. Fry for approximately 7 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through (internal temperature reaches 165°F/74°C).
  11. Remove the fried chicken from the oil and allow it to drain on a cooling rack set over a baking sheet.
  12. Repeat this process until all pieces of chicken have been fried to perfection.

The Sandwich Assembly:

  1. While the fried chicken is still warm (or briefly reheat if needed), place a slice of cheddar cheese on top of each piece of chicken. Place them back into your already heated 200°F (95°C) oven for a minute or two to allow the cheese to melt slightly over the chicken.
  2. Take one warm, cheesy fried chicken piece and place it onto one quarter of a bacon cheddar waffle.
  3. Layer with fresh slices of tomato and crisp lettuce, or any other toppings your heart desires (e.g., pickles, red onion).
  4. Generously spread the delicious Maple Sriracha Aioli on another quarter of a waffle.
  5. Place the aioli-smeared waffle quarter on top of the chicken and toppings to complete your sandwich.
  6. Your ultimate Buttermilk Fried Chicken and Waffle Sandwich is now complete! Enjoy this incredible culinary creation!
