I often incorporate them into my festive Christmas cookie boxes, and they are always the first to disappear!

The Magic of Flavor and Texture

What makes a chocolate covered Oreo so irresistibly good? It’s the delightful interplay of textures and flavors. You start with the iconic crunchy chocolate wafer, followed by the soft, sweet vanilla cream filling. Then, a generous blanket of smooth, tempered chocolate provides a satisfying snap and melts in your mouth, creating a multi-layered sensory experience. The subtle bitterness of the chocolate cookie beautifully complements the sweetness of the filling and the outer chocolate shell, making each bite a perfect symphony of taste.

Essential Ingredients for Perfect Chocolate Covered Oreos

A package of Oreo cookies next to prep bowls of milk chocolate chips and white chocolate chips.
  • Oreos: The foundation of this delightful dessert! While standard Oreo cookies are a classic choice, don’t hesitate to experiment. Double-stuffed Oreos offer an even creamier filling, or you could explore some of the exciting crazy flavored ones for a unique twist. Gluten-free Oreos also work wonderfully for those with dietary restrictions.
  • Chocolate: The star of the show! I typically use high-quality chocolate chips for convenience, but you have several fantastic options.

    • Chocolate Chips: Easily accessible and melt well.
    • Baking Bars: Offer superior flavor and a smoother melt when finely chopped.
    • Candy Melts: A great alternative for vibrant colors and a smooth finish, as they don’t require tempering. They come in a variety of colors, perfect for festive occasions.

Feel free to use any type of chocolate you prefer – creamy milk chocolate, rich dark chocolate (70% cocoa or higher for a more intense flavor), or sweet white chocolate. Using multiple kinds allows for beautiful visual contrast and diverse flavor profiles.

Recommended Equipment: Chocolate Molds

For that professional, polished look, I highly recommend using a chocolate mold. There are many different options available, but I personally found this silicone mold to be excellent for consistency and easy release. It ensures perfectly shaped, uniform chocolate-covered Oreos.

(Don’t have a mold? No problem! You can still make delicious chocolate-covered Oreos by simply dipping them. Using a fork, dip each Oreo into the melted chocolate, letting any excess drip off, then place it on parchment paper to dry. While they may not have the perfectly smooth, molded finish, they will be just as delicious and satisfying!)

How To Make Easy Chocolate Covered Oreos

Creating these delightful treats is a straightforward process that yields stunning results. Follow these simple steps for perfectly coated Oreos every time.

A six photo collage showing the steps to make chocolate covered Oreos.
  1. Prepare Your Chocolate: Begin by melting your chosen chocolates. If using multiple types (like white and milk chocolate), melt them in separate, microwave-safe bowls. Heat in 20-second intervals, stirring thoroughly after each interval, until the chocolate is smooth and fully melted. Alternatively, use a double boiler for a more controlled melting process, ensuring the chocolate doesn’t seize.
  2. Fill the Molds (First Layer): Using a spoon, carefully fill each cavity of your chocolate mold approximately one-third of the way with melted chocolate. Ensure the chocolate is evenly distributed at the bottom to form a smooth base for your Oreo.
  3. Place the Oreos: Gently place an Oreo cookie on top of the melted chocolate in each mold. Press down lightly, just enough for the chocolate to come up around the sides of the cookie, fully encasing its edges. Be careful not to press too hard, as this can break the cookie.
  4. Cover the Top: Add another tablespoon (or enough to cover) of melted chocolate over the top of each Oreo. Use a toothpick or a small offset spatula to spread the chocolate evenly across the surface, making sure the entire cookie is submerged and covered up to the level of the mold’s edge. Gently tap the mold on your counter a few times to release any air bubbles and help the chocolate settle smoothly.
  5. Chill to Set: Transfer the filled molds to the refrigerator and chill for about 30 minutes, or until the chocolate is completely firm and set. If you don’t have fridge space, they can set at room temperature for about 60 minutes, but chilling speeds up the process and ensures a firm snap.
  6. Release and Decorate: Once firm, carefully press each cookie out of its mold. Silicone molds are particularly easy for this. If desired, you can reheat any leftover chocolate and drizzle it decoratively over the tops of your finished chocolate-covered Oreos. This adds an extra touch of elegance and allows for further customization with sprinkles or other toppings before the drizzle sets.

Expert Tips for Perfect Chocolate Covered Oreos

Achieving flawless chocolate-covered Oreos is simpler with a few insider tips:

  1. Melting Chocolate Alternatives: If you don’t have a microwave, a double boiler is an excellent method. Place a heatproof bowl over a saucepan of simmering water, ensuring the bottom of the bowl doesn’t touch the water. Stir constantly until melted. Be cautious not to overheat the chocolate, as it can seize and become too thick or grainy to work with.
  2. Handle with Care: Once set, chocolate softens quickly at room temperature and can easily show fingerprints. It’s best to release the Oreos from the mold directly onto your serving platter or into individual cupcake liners for handling. If working in a warm environment, consider wearing thin cotton gloves.
  3. Creative Toppings: Unleash your creativity! Before the drizzled chocolate (or the main chocolate coating, if you’re not doing a second drizzle) fully hardens, add your favorite toppings. Options include festive sprinkles for holidays, crushed candy canes for Christmas, chopped nuts, shredded coconut, mini chocolate chips, a sprinkle of sea salt to enhance the chocolate flavor, or even edible glitter for a touch of sparkle.
  4. Tempering Chocolate (Optional but Recommended): For a truly professional finish with a glossy sheen and a crisp snap, consider tempering your chocolate. While not strictly necessary for delicious results, tempering prevents bloom (white streaks) and ensures a stable coating. A simple seed method involves melting most of your chocolate, then stirring in finely chopped solid chocolate until fully melted and cooled to the correct working temperature.
  5. Troubleshooting Seized Chocolate: If your chocolate becomes thick and clumpy (seized), it’s likely due to a tiny bit of water or overheating. You can sometimes rescue it by stirring in a teaspoon of vegetable oil or melted shortening until smooth, but flavor and texture may be slightly affected.

How To Store Chocolate Covered Oreos

Proper storage ensures your chocolate-covered Oreos remain fresh and delicious for an extended period. Store them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to four weeks, although they are best enjoyed within the first week for optimal freshness. For even longer preservation, you can store them in the refrigerator for up to a month or in the freezer for up to six months. When freezing, layer them with parchment paper to prevent sticking. Thaw frozen Oreos at room temperature before serving.

Frequently Asked Questions About Chocolate Covered Oreos

Can I use other types of cookies instead of Oreos?

Absolutely! The beauty of this recipe is its adaptability. Feel free to experiment with other classic cookies. Nutter Butters make fantastic chocolate-covered treats, as do graham crackers, shortbread cookies, or even simple vanilla wafers. Each cookie will offer a slightly different texture and flavor profile, creating new and exciting variations.

Can I use different types of chocolate?

Of course! The choice of chocolate is entirely up to your personal preference. Dark, milk, or white chocolate all work beautifully for this recipe. You can even combine them, using one type for the base coat and another for drizzling, or creating marbled effects. For a richer flavor, try bittersweet chocolate, or for a sweeter profile, opt for white chocolate. Candy melts are also a great option for vibrant colors.

Can I make this without a mold?

You certainly can! While molds provide a perfectly uniform and polished look, they are not essential for delicious results. Simply use a fork to dip your Oreos straight into a bowl of melted chocolate. Tap the fork gently against the side of the bowl to remove any excess chocolate, then place the coated cookie on parchment paper or a silicone mat to cool and set. For a fun twist, insert a lollipop stick into the cream filling of each Oreo before dipping, creating adorable chocolate-covered Oreo lollipops!

Can I make these in advance?

Yes, these are excellent for making ahead of time, which makes them perfect for party prep or holiday gifting. They can be prepared up to a week in advance and stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for the best results. For longer storage, refer to the freezing instructions in the “How To Store” section above.

How do I prevent my chocolate from seizing?

Chocolate seizes (becomes thick and unworkable) when it comes into contact with even a tiny drop of water. Ensure all your bowls, spatulas, and utensils are completely dry. If using a double boiler, make sure the water in the saucepan does not touch the bottom of the melting bowl, and steam doesn’t escape into the chocolate. Stirring frequently and melting slowly also helps prevent overheating.

What is the best type of chocolate to use for dipping?

For ease of use and a smooth finish, chocolate specifically designed for melting, such as baking chocolate bars or quality chocolate chips (often containing stabilizers), works best. Candy melts are also fantastic if you’re looking for vibrant colors and don’t want to worry about tempering. Avoid using standard chocolate bars meant for eating, as they can sometimes be more temperamental when melted and may require tempering for a truly smooth, glossy coat.

Ingredients

  • 12 Oreos
  • 2 cups milk chocolate chips or chopped baking chocolate
  • 2 cups white chocolate chips or chopped baking chocolate
  • Optional: Sprinkles, crushed nuts, or other toppings for decoration

Instructions

  1. In two separate medium bowls, add the milk chocolate and white chocolate, ensuring they do not mix.
  2. Melt one bowl of chocolate at a time in the microwave using 20-second increments. Stir well after each interval until the chocolate is completely smooth and melted. Repeat for the other bowl of chocolate.
  3. Using a spoon, fill each cavity of your Oreo mold about one-third of the way with the melted chocolate.
  4. Carefully place an Oreo cookie on top of the chocolate in each mold. Gently press the cookie down until the chocolate rises up and covers its sides.
  5. Add another tablespoon of melted chocolate on top of each cookie. Use a toothpick or small spatula to spread the chocolate evenly, ensuring the Oreo is fully coated and level with the top of the mold.
  6. If needed, add a little more chocolate to fully cover the Oreo and fill the mold to the brim.
  7. Gently tap the mold on the counter a few times. This helps to eliminate air bubbles and ensure the chocolate is evenly distributed and smooth.
  8. Place the mold in the refrigerator for 30 minutes, or leave it on the counter at room temperature for 60 minutes, until the chocolate is completely solid and firm.
  9. Once set, carefully press each cookie out of the mold. Silicone molds allow for easy release.
  10. If desired, reheat any leftover chocolate from the bowls in 20-second increments until fully melted again.
  11. Scoop the reheated chocolate into a sandwich bag. Cut a very small hole in one corner of the bag. Drizzle the chocolate decoratively over the tops of your finished chocolate-covered Oreos. Add sprinkles or other toppings while the drizzle is still wet.

Notes

You can use a double boiler on the stovetop to melt the chocolate instead of the microwave for more controlled heating.

Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 month, or up to 6 months in the freezer for prolonged freshness.

For extra shine and a crisp snap, consider tempering your chocolate, though it’s not essential for delicious results.
